April 22, 2003
Olympic success in Saxonia already now! DATA MINING CUP 2003 has surpassed the number of participants of the last year!
Chemnitz, April 22, 2003. On April 15, 2003 the DATA MINING CUP 2003 Contest,
initiated in Chemnitz (Saxonia, Germany), has started with an amazing high number
of participants. Thus, it has surpassed itself compared with the contest of the last year.
This year, as every year, the prudsys AG, the university of Chemnitz and the KDNet call up
students from all over the world to compete in solving a Data Mining task. On April 15, 2003
the starting signal was given and up to now more than 400 participants of 136 universities from
34 countries have registered for participation. By the May 14, 2003 people who are interested
in a participation can still register online.
„Our primary objective was to keep the high number of participants on the same level as
last year. We are very pleased that one month before the registration period ends the
number of participants has exceeded this number. This shows the increasing interest
in Data Mining worldwide.“ says Sandra Hömke, the chief organizer from prudsys.
This year, the organizers have worked out a task of eminent practical importance. The
task of the contest is to identify spam-mails by Data Mining before they reach the user’s mailbox.
The prizes will be handed over during the DMC User Event Days that will take place on June 18-20,
2003 in Chemnitz (Germany), and which have grown over the last years into the most important
conference of Data Mining in Germany.

About the philosophy of the DATA MINING CUP:
The DATA MINING CUP is a unique combination of IT students contest and specialist
conference. The goal of Data Mining is to reveal "treasures" so far undiscovered,
i.e. hidden relations, patterns and trends in electronic customer and sales databases
in order to use them for a substantial improvement of marketing and sales activities.
For a successful solution of this task, not only a good Data Mining analysis tool but
also the appropriate know-how are required!
To specifically cause university graduates to become interested in the topic of Data
Mining and Analytical CRM and to provide them with the right knowledge, the DATA MINING
CUP contest was initiated in 2000. Since that time, the contest takes place every year
supported by well-known partners and sponsors.
The highlight of the DATA MINING CUP are the DATA MINING CUP User Event Days. They
not only form an optimal platform for students but also for business people interested in
Data Mining to get involved in Data Mining and Analytical CRM during this three-day
specialist conference.
