People and Data: Understanding Customer Behavior
Dr. Andreas Weigend, who served as Amazon.com's Chief Scientist until early 2004 and now heads up the consulting firm Weigend Associates LLC, shares insights into the behavior of customers on the web. He discusses sources of data in e-business, gives concrete examples of online experiments, and shows probabilistic models of user intent that are based on click data. He presents a framework for modeling the long-term effects of actions such as including sponsored links to competitors, and applies social networks theory to acquire customers and behavioral economics to design incentives. Examples are taken from online retail, online advertising, and online dating sites.
